S&W Kitchens would like to congratulate the winners of the first S&W/SSC sponsored design contest.
We worked with Professor Sable Stroud, M. Arch., NCIDQ, and his Furniture Design course. The class was tasked with creating a unique ‘statement’ island and seating for a great room. The presentation needed to seat a minimum of 3 people and show all of the structural aspects of the design – including cabinetry, storage, supports, as well as any appliances and finishes.
There were 18 entries and the top three were truly innovative and well designed. Here are the winners and parts of their presentations.
First place went to Emily Gore and her Monaco Island. Her design was beautiful and her drawings and ‘Mood Board’ were complete and easy to read. The natural materials are very on trend as well.
DestineeVanLoonSecond place was won by Destinee Van Loon for her Not Enough Cooks in the Kitchen island and banquette. It was professionally drawn and presented and innovative with it’s use of two types of seating.
Third place went to Chloe Morales. Her Simply Marble island represented a simple design that would fit well in many kitchens today.
Professor Stroud said, “Getting students out of the classroom — even a virtual one necessitated by the pandemic — and connecting with the local industry through a ‘real-world’ project like this is an invaluable part of the academic experience in an applied art like interior design. Students were encouraged to use S&W as a resource throughout the process, asking Senior Designer and Special Projects Manager Bill Burke about his experience and current market trends, and the incentive to have their work evaluated by professionals — and awarded monetary prizes — yielded a range of student work from highly conceptual ideas to ultimately buildable solutions.”
“S&W Kitchens is excited to be able to provide incentives to the young people entering our industry”, said Joe Steenbeke, one of the family owners of S&W.
The judges for this contest were Krista Agapito, Director of Sales, Lindsey Schwartz, Design Manager for the Brevard showroom and Sarah Kraus Bartelson, an SSC graduate. All are award-winning designers in the kitchen and bath industry.
Many of the future home designers for Central Florida attend the design program at Seminole State College. S&W Kitchens provided cash prizes and judged the contest to inspire the students to create innovative, stylish and functional spaces for today’s homes.
