Amy, our Super Star Intern! She draws, assists designers during client meetings and organizes displays! She can clean out a closet or layout a kitchen in CAD with equal ease and confidence!
Amy was one of the interns for S&W Kitchens this past semester. She says “It’s great for real world experience, especially in the pricing of projects and working with customers.”
The aspiring designers work side by side with the seasoned veterans, often using 20/20 software to draw the kitchen or bath from the customer specifications. While they practice some of this in their classes, the interns find the real world application very different from classwork.
The interns are drawn from the students at Seminole State College – long known for it interior design programs. S&W Kitchens has worked with the school for many years giving student groups tours and discussing career development and opportunities. From one to three students are chosen each semester for internships at our locations.
William Burke, Senior Designer with S&W for over 30 years, oversees the intern program. He says, “It’s a great program–we love finding ways to help the communities we live in. The internship is a win-win proposition….we get as much out of it as the students do. For the students, it’s an opportunity to jump out of the textbook and into the kitchen. The benefit to us is that it helps keep us abreast of current trends and design thoughts and ideas…a perfect example would be the trend towards universal design.”
