Why is there a wide disparity in pricing for cabinetry?

S&W Kitchens remodel beautiful wood cabinetry project
Published:  April 30, 2013

If you are planning a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, you might be wondering why cabinetry quotes can range from $150 per linear foot to over $800.

While it’s tempting to compare cabinets like cars, the disparity in pricing usually comes down to three things: materials, customization, and longevity.

Here is the honest breakdown of what you are paying for, and how to choose the right level for your home.

The 3 Tiers of Cabinetry: Stock, Semi-Custom, and Custom

Cabinetry with the KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association) seal of approval are separated into three categories: Understanding these will help you budget for your renovation

See the Difference: Examples of Cabinetry Tiers

It can be hard to visualize the difference between "Stock" and "Custom" just by reading about it. While S&W Kitchens does not offer stock cabinetry, we have included an example here to provide a complete and helpful comparison for your remodeling journey.

1. Stock Cabinetry: A classic stock cabinet

2. Semi-Custom Cabinetry:

This bathroom from our North Carpenter Road project beautifully illustrates the refined flexibility of semi-custom cabinetry. In this tier, you can achieve a sophisticated, designer look by selecting from a wide array of high-end door styles and finishes, such as the rich wood grain shown here.

3. Custom Cabinetry:

The Difference is in the Details

A kitchen renovation is a significant investment, and the difference in pricing often reflects the difference in lifespan. True quality isn't just about how the cabinets look on day one, but how they perform after ten years of daily use. Here is what separates standard cabinets from a lasting investment:

  • The Finish: Stock cabinets use basic paints. Custom Cabinets use multi-step catalyzed conversion varnishes that resist oils, heat, and chipping for decades.

  • The Hardware: Soft-close hinges and heavy-duty glides prevent doors from slamming and sagging over time.

  • The Structure: What holds your countertops up matters. A solid 5/8" or 3/4" plywood box provides the structural integrity needed to support heavy quartz or granite surfaces without shifting, ensuring your kitchen remains as solid as the day it was installed.

Beyond the Kitchen: Cabinetry for Every Room

While the kitchen consumes the most budget, the same principles apply to the rest of the house. Because we treat every project with the same level of care, whether it's a luxury estate or a single-room update, we can help you find the right cabinetry for other spaces.

  • Bathroom Remodeling: Bath vanities face high humidity. Avoid stock particleboard here; look for semi-custom units with moisture-resistant finishes.

  • Laundry Rooms: This is a high-function zone. Semi-custom is often the sweet spot, allowing for specific storage solutions for hampers and ironing boards without the full custom price tag.

  • Closets and Mudrooms: You don't always need full kitchen-grade cabinets here. We can design effective storage solutions that maximize space without breaking the bank.

An Alternative Option: Cabinet Refacing

If your existing cabinet boxes are in good condition (solid wood, structurally sound) but the style is outdated—think "exposed hinges circa 1972", you might not need a total tear-out.

Cabinet Refacing can save you significantly on labor and material costs. We replace the doors and drawer fronts and veneer the existing boxes to match. It gives you that "brand new" look for a fraction of the price of a full custom remodel.

Establishing Your Priorities

During our initial consultations, we help you determine the "Reason for Remodel."

  • Are you staying in this home for 20 years? (Invest in Full Custom for longevity).
  • Are you updating for a sale in 2 years? (Look at Semi-Custom).
  • Do you need a specific layout change? (You will likely need Semi-Custom or higher).

No matter your choice, be sure to explore all of your options with our design team. Remember, this renovation could be the last one you do in this space for a long time, true value is about getting it right the first time.
